Survival Diaries

The rain shot down on them, and for a minute everything spun. They didn’t know where they were. They were all alone. And positively lost . That was when they saw him’

But let’s rewind. The story begins with ten students. Ten eager students all awaiting their adventurous trekking expedition to Harishchandragad Fort. They’d spent a month planning that trip. And now that it was there, they could barely contain their excitement. The trip started off with a sunny sky. They started the trek slowly, but surely. There were a few huffs and puffs there but it seemed to be going smooth. Let me tell you one thing about that mountain. It isn’t the easiest one to climb. In fact, it wasn’t easy at all. The one who reached the top would rejoice at their strength. Our friends here were nothing less. They had in them the capacity to climb any mountain ( or so they liked to think.) But sometimes the nature gods just have to play against you.

There are times in life when everything seem perfect, but one mishap later, it seems as if everything is escalating down the hill. Okay it’s time to recreate the pun I just made. Because, on that particular trip, something did go tumbling down like Jack and Jill . One of our enthusiastic trekkers got a little bit too overenthusiastic. In his attempt to go faster than his friends, he tripped on a big stone. And down he went. I honestly feel sorry for the poor lad, as that wasn’t the kind of hill anyone wanted to tumble from. He was quite hurt.

While getting him patched up for his journey ahead, they didn’t notice them. They didn’t notice the grey clouds now slowly emerging overhead, bringing with them a whole lot of misfortune. As the boy sat with his leg bandaged, from the evening sky came a drop of foreboding trouble. Yes, what they thought to be sweat , turned suddenly to a downpour. Now, our ten friends faced quite a dilemma. What could they do? They had come quite a long way. Retreating this late, in the rain was far from what they wanted. Their best hope lay in covering the rest of their distance carefully and hope for the best. Oh, you poor, poor, boys. It was as if the rain was foreshadowing the events to come. If only they could read this story, they would know, that was the decision they should’ve avoided. But, alas, they continued down ( or should I say ‘up’) their path. Soon they had no idea where they were. They couldn’t see any pointers. And every one of them was resorted to cursing their sad luck.

They were wet, tired and all they wanted was rest. As if things couldn’t get any worse, they heard a rumbling in the distance. Now the boys were as terrified as they possible could be. The sound got closer. They heard a rustling in the leaves, and took a stand. And then they saw him. From the ain and the shadows, came our knight in furry armour. He was the hero of this tale. The one creature with the power to save them at that point of time .Yep, it was a dog. They could barely make out his form due to the rain and the mud on his furry coat. But that was when they knew that all was not lost. They certainly were, but now they had a Trump card. They went closer to him, and petted him. He immediately gave a persistent growl which seemed to be saying, ‘ Oh, Come On! What are you doing in the rain! We have places to go to!’ And with that we started moving. And they followed him. Blindly, and with complete faith . And he didn’t let them down.

Within minutes they reached a small cave like structure built for wandering trekkers. They sat there, thankful for the shelter , and ate a few snacks they had luckily packed. Wet, but still better than nothing. They gave some to their saviour, The Dog.

They got out the morning, when it had stopped raining and with newfound resolution reached their destination. For them, it had been a tough, tough night. But one thing was for sure. They would never forget that one brave soul who helped them out in times of dire need.
